How to Switch Your Twitter Timeline Back to Reverse Chronological Order

Twitter is bringing sexy back.

Oops! I mean Twitter has brought reverse chronological order back!

Say what? Say yes!

You spoke and the tweeting gods listened. So now you can go with the flow ~ a.k.a. the algorithm ~ or be kind and rewind the whole thing back and GIF party, like it’s 2015.

How to see tweets in reverse chronological order

In case you missed Jack’s tweet, Twitter has updated its “Show the best Tweets first” setting, allowing you to switch it off and get back to the old Twitter timeline.

Twitter made the change, which it had been planning for a while, right after a suggestion from Twitter user Emma Kinema who discovered that muting certain strings of words — such as “suggest_recycled_tweet_inline” — would remove the suggested tweets and highlight tweets that Twitter’s algorithm has been pushing into timelines.

Twitter app

  1. Open up your Twitter app.

  2. Go to Settings and Privacy.

  3. Go to Content Preferences.

  4. Turn off the toggle switch at the top.

Twitter.com

  1. Open up Twitter.com in your browser.

  2. Go to Settings and Privacy.

  3. Go to Account.

  4. Scroll down to "Show the best tweets first".

  5. Un-check that setting.

Think all of this is too good to be true? Let’s be honest, it might be.

If something happens to this new reverse chronological feature, there are some hacks you can use to make sure you get your tweets just the way you like ‘em, uninfluenced by promoted tweets, “in case you missed” modules, or that pesky algorithm:

  • Use Tweetdeck - it’s not just for social listening, it’s for timeline scrolling, too!

  • Use Tweetbot - create lists and use them for timeline scrolling

  • Create a list of your favorite tweeps and use it for algorithm-free timeline scrolling

Have questions? Tweet me at @itskac. I am happy to help you be kind and rewind! :) #oldskool
